How Cable Ties Help in Petting Zoo Enclosures

When we think of cable ties, we typically imagine them tidying cables in industrial or engineering projects—hardly something we’d associate with playful pets. Yet at the Sanya Shangri-La Pet Park, you can see exactly how cable ties come into play in a pet-friendly setting.

1. Basic Structure for Small Animal Enclosures

At the park, each animal area is surrounded by a fence. For smaller animals like ducklings, plastic mesh is added to the outside of the wooden fence, secured with natural color cable ties. The mesh prevents the animals from slipping through any gaps. From the photos, these appear to be light duty cable ties—bundled neatly, with no visible looseness or aging. This setup keeps both animals and children safe while preserving the view for visitors.

2. Enclosures for Medium-Sized Animals

For slightly larger animals, such as raccoons, the park uses a sturdier metal mesh instead of plastic. It’s also attached with standard nylon cable ties. Metal mesh offers better rigidity and weather resistance to prevent animals from escaping or bothering people outside the fence. Judging by the size of the ties (around 3.0 mm in width), the park is still using light-duty ties—spaced every 10 cm or so. However, active animals could pull or tear them loose over time, especially if the tensile strength is only around 10 kg for this cable tie size.

3. Enclosures for Stronger Animals

In the final photo, you can see the goat enclosure. It uses three layers of fencing: a wooden fence, a metal mesh, and an extra reinforcing mesh—again fastened with light-duty cable ties. One corner shows clear signs of damage, with broken wire and snapped ties. This indicates that for powerful animals, a tie width of 3 mm and a tensile strength of about 10 kg is not reliable. A cable tie size of at least 9 mm wide, offering over 100 kg of tensile strength, is recommended to ensure the stability and durability of the enclosure.

Recommendations for Using Cable Ties in Pet Parks

From the cases above, it’s clear that cable ties are common in pet parks. However, the choice of cable tie sizes and proper installation directly affect the safety of enclosure structures. Different animals have varying strength levels, so the required tensile strength will differ accordingly. Light duty cable ties work well for small animal netting, medium-strength ties suit mid-sized animals, and heavy duty cable ties are vital for larger animals that can push or collide with fencing. Additionally, for outdoor use, it’s best to select UV-resistant cable ties capable of withstanding long-term sun exposure, high temperatures, and humidity, especially for places like Sanya where ultraviolet rays are particularly strong.
